Ripstop Nylon
Ripstop Nylon
What is Ripstop?
Ripstop Nylon is a woven fabric. It uses a special reinforcing technique that makes it resistant to tearing and ripping. Ripstop "stops the rip". During weaving, reinforcement yarns are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern.
NEW! We just received a huge shipment of DWR (durable water repellent) ripstop from famous outerwear maker, Canada Goose. These are 20d (denier) and weigh just 40 gsm (grams per square meter) or 1.2 ounces per square yard. Over 30 colors to choose from! All styles from Canada Goose will begin with the color name 20d.
We also have a couple of 10d ripstops, that weight just 15 gsm (.4 oz per square yard) Crazy light! Those color names will begin with 10d.
What is Silnylon?
We carry many colors of silicone treated ripstop, known by many as Silnylon. However, the style we carry is 1.4 oz/sqyd or about 50 gsm and we include this weight in the color name.
The silicone coating on these styles is called Soar Coat.
Soar Coat Parachute Fabric
What is Soar Coat Parachute fabric?
Soar Coat parachute fabric is treated with silicone on both sides. It has zero porosity and is used in the manufacture of parachutes. As we did not purchase this fabric directly from the manufacturer, we cannot provide any certification for the batch. While we have not see any flaws we can't anticipate what we might find as there are typically hundreds of yards on a roll, Therefore we are pricing it as second quality out of an abundance of caution so we recommend it for uses other than making parachutes. Soar Coat Parachute fabric first quality typically sells for around $18 per yard. We have priced our stock accordingly.
Silnylon makes great stuff sacks or backpack covers. Although we don't consider Silnylon to be very breathable, its still used by many to make temporary lightweight raincoats. We were particulary impressed with the Ultralight Windshell pattern by Learn MYOG. It incorporates windflaps for breathability.
The Stretch Ripstop style we carry is currently available in sage color only. It is not Soar Coat, or Silicone coated.
If you are looking to make a very breathable rain shell, we recommend Polartec Neoshell.
